What is digital nomad and the difference between them and original nomadism?
Let’s have a look first to an origin of nomads. The word „nomad“ comes from Greek and means the one who wanders for pasture. And this meaning also perfectly describe nomadic lifestyle in the past. The hunter-gatherer tribes or the pastoral nomads moved from one place to another to find better condition for living. Infertile areas with lack of resources forced whole communities to keep moving to find another place with richer fauna and flora.
However nomads don’t stop after they found a better place than the previous one. Nomads lived in modest portable dwellings to be able to transfer to another place after a while. This lifestyle with no settled home changed from that time a lot. Even though there are still some tribes and communities that still live such a original nomadic lifestyle digitalisation brought new type of nomadism that changed the meaning of modern nomadic lifestyle.
Already in 1997 David Manners and Tsugio Makimoto came with publication Digital Nomad in which they described this upcoming trend. As they defined in their book: There are three essentials that support this comfortable, digital nomadic lifestyle: an intelligent mobile terminal, a high-speed communication network, and cloud computing. Without these essential modern infrastructures, digital nomading would have been quite difficult.
However remote working is not only possible thanks to the progress of mobile intelligent devices and high-speed communication networks but also more and more companies realise advantages of hiring remote employees. Increasing number of remote job offers and its heterogeneity allows more people from different working areas to work remotely and decide what would be their next working destination.
The difference between nomadism in the past and modern digital nomadism is that in the past they moved to be able to work and find better condition to live, but nowadays digital nomads don´t move because they have to, they move because they want to. Digital nomadism is lifestyle you can choose.
To put it in a nutshell digital nomad is a person that has location independent job, can work from anywhere and change working destination more than once a year. So the main difference between modern working nomads and original nomads is that nomads in the past travelled to live but digital nomads live to travel! They can use this freedom of their virtual work with permanent home office status to discover the world.
